UNESCO and 11 famous spa towns of Europe

In 2021 the Famous Spa Towns of Europe will be addedto the UNESCO World Heritage List . Specifically, these are towns that make up the West Bohemian spa triangle – Karlovy Vary, Františkovy Lázně and Mariánské Lázně, the German towns of Baden-Baden, Bad Kissingen and Bad Ems, Baden in Austria, Vichy in France, Montecatini Terme in Italy, Spa in Belgium and the City of Bath in England.

A phenomenon that helped shape European values

Especially in the 18th and 19th centuries, European spas were an important cultural and social phenomenon. And it was not only the urban-architectural form of these towns that was unique. These progressive centres of medicine and balneology naturally became meeting places for political, intellectual and artistic elites. The spa embodied the Enlightenment philosophy. Important social and cultural innovations that helped shape European values took place here.

Spas as you know them today

Europe's historic spa towns, listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, have much to offer in the 21st century, and it's not just their genius loci. The field of balneology, a treatment using natural resources of mineral water, continues to develop here. The centuries-old treatment system uses modern technology and the latest findings of contemporary science with a focus on prevention. Get to know the spa phenomenon up close and personal, perhaps in the famous spa town of Europe, Karlovy Vary.
